Carpets Today
Today modern carpets can be separated into different categories through their materials used and how they are made. Carpets are made from single or blended fibres, which can be natural or synthetic. The choice of materials used in the production of the carpet will dictate significantly what the price will be. Materials used vary from wool, nylon, polypropylene, polyester and PTT. The binding used in the production of the carpet is usually cotton.
One popular method of producing a carpet is woven. This method is a loom production method and can be used to produce carpets with intricate patterns and many colours. Needlefelt is a modern carpet production method that uses electrostatic attraction of fibres to create a strong durable carpet that is popular in many commercial premises such as hotels. Other methods of carpet production include flatweave and knotted pile.
Carpet binding is an important part of carpet production. The binding of a carpet is done around the edge of a carpet to stop it from fraying. A carpet binding will usually be composed of cotton or nylon. Sometimes natural materials can be used for binding and leather is one that is occasionally used. Other unusual natural bindings include grass and bamboo.
